Cholesterol

Cholesterol is produced in the liver. It is packed with a particle triglycerides in VLDL, before reaching the blood. These triglycerides can be absorbed by the tissues. Finally, LDL (low density lipoprotein) is born of these particles containing mostly cholesterol. When the LDL remains in the bloodstream, it will ultimately be absorbed by cells, which can cause fatty degeneration of the arterial wall by embedding it.
